ExxonMobil Q3 2026 Beats Expectations with Record Refining, Raised Dividend and $20 Billion Buybacks

ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) released its third-quarter 2026 earnings on October 30, delivering robust performance driven by refining strength and strategic operational gains.

The company reported U.S. GAAP earnings of $15.4 billion, or $3.72 per share, with adjusted (non‑GAAP) earnings of $17.5 billion, or $4.23 per share—both well ahead of the prior quarter’s results and consensus expectations. Free cash flow reached $19.1 billion, supporting its capital-efficient operations.

Notably, ExxonMobil achieved record year-to-date refining performance, delivering the highest global fuels utilization (excluding Middle East impacts), highest global diesel yield and highest North American diesel volumes. These improvements reflect efficiency gains and strategic capacity expansion.

The company also marked major production milestones in its upstream portfolio: 1 billion cumulative barrels at both Guyana and Kearl, and 100 million tons of LNG from PNG LNG. In a strategic upstream move, ExxonMobil assumed operatorship of Papua LNG and boosted its working interest to 34%, while raising its interest in Mozambique’s Rovuma LNG to 50%, where it already operates. These developments reinforce its global leadership in LNG projects.

In shareholder returns, ExxonMobil declared a fourth-quarter dividend of $1.07 per share, continuing its unbroken streak of 44 consecutive years of increases—longer than over 95% of S&P 500 companies. In tandem, it authorized $20 billion in share repurchases for 2027.

These results underscore strong cash generation and disciplined capital allocation, underpinning operational resilience and shareholder value enhancements.

Later this week, analysts responded favorably: UBS lifted its price target to $213 while maintaining a Buy rating; JPMorgan raised its target to $199 with an Overweight call; Morgan Stanley nudged its target to $187 with an Overweight rating; Citi raised theirs to $175 with a Neutral stance. DZ Bank bucked the trend, downgrading to Sell with a $170 target. These revisions reflect confidence in ExxonMobil’s earnings power and capital return strategy following the Q3 release.

Looking ahead, investors will monitor whether the company can sustain refining gains, deliver on upstream expansion, and whether international LNG markets remain favorable. The strength in free cash flow and capital returns may help offset volatility in oil prices, positioning ExxonMobil as a resilient value play among energy majors.
