Western Digital Spotlights AI and Cloud-Driven Transition as 90% of Business Now Tied to Hyperscalers
Sun, September 13, 2026At Citi’s Global TMT Conference on September 9, Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) provided a clear-sighted update on its business transformation, emphasizing its shifting reliance from the traditional consumer and PC markets toward hyperscale cloud and AI customers.
Cloud and AI Demand Now Account for Vast Majority of Revenue
CFO Kris Sennesael disclosed that approximately 90% of Western Digital’s business now comes from cloud infrastructure customers, a dramatic shift from its more cyclical, consumer-centric past. He explained that the company is now less tethered to GDP or PC refresh cycles and more aligned with long-term planning by hyperscalers. This business model shift positions WDC as a secular growth story rather than one driven by cyclical demand fluctuations. The information was shared during the conference presentation held Monday, September 9.
Exabyte Demand Growing Rapidly, Outpacing Supply
Western Digital estimates that global exabyte storage demand will grow at a compound annual rate exceeding 25% over the next five years. However, supply is currently the limiting factor in meeting that demand. Supply constraints are largely due to the company being between major product cycles—even though exabyte shipments reached around 25% growth in fiscal 2026, including one quarter with a 34% year-over-year increase. This dynamic underscores strong structural demand amid capacity tightness.
Product Roadmap and Margin Improvements Provide Operational Tailwinds
The company detailed its current product transition strategy. Newly ramping 40TB ePMR drives are already shipping, while first-generation HAMR drives (up to 44TB) are expected to ship in the first half of calendar 2027, with future models exceeding 50TB planned thereafter. Alongside capacity expansion, the company is developing high-bandwidth drives with 2× performance improvements—critical as capacities rise.
Financially, Western Digital is benefiting from improved pricing and mix. In the most recent quarter, gross margins climbed into the mid-50% range, with operating margins reaching the mid-40s. Price per terabyte rose by 18–19% year over year, and incremental margins topped 70%. Free cash flow margin has hit the company’s target of 30% in several quarters, bolstered by its transition to a net cash position following debt paydown and the monetization of SanDisk shares.
Supply Constraints and Customer Agreements Offer Visibility
Reflecting strong demand visibility, Western Digital reported customers are seeking long-term supply agreements extending to 2030 and 2031. That visibility, combined with limited supply and product transitions, is constraining revenue today but provides predictability for the future.
Investor Implications
This transformation suggests a renewed investor lens on Western Digital as a structurally advantaged partner in the AI/cloud infrastructure ecosystem. With strong margins, robust free cash flow, and an emphasis on shareholder returns—including increased dividends and share repurchases—WDC presents a case for a mature, capital-efficient business. However, supply-side bottlenecks remain a near-term constraint.
As Western Digital ramps new drive technologies and navigates supply growth, investors will be watching closely for signs of accelerated capacity delivery, margin stability, and sustained visibility into multiyear demand from hyperscalers. This presentation marks a defining moment in WDC’s repositioned growth trajectory toward cloud and AI-driven secular expansion.
