FDA Approves Bixlenvo: Gilead Unveils Simplified HIV Treatment Option
Fri, August 28, 2026Gilead Sciences (Nasdaq: GILD) received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval on August 27, 2026, for Bixlenvo™—a groundbreaking once-daily single-tablet regimen combining bictegravir and lenacapavir for virologically suppressed adults living with HIV who are on complex multi-tablet therapies. This streamlined option represents the smallest single-tablet regimen (STR) available for this patient group. The approval is based on Phase 3 data from the ARTISTRY‑1 and ARTISTRY‑2 trials, which demonstrated comparable efficacy at Week 48 in maintaining virologic suppression with no new safety concerns identified.
The FDA approval of Bixlenvo marks a significant development in HIV therapeutics, offering a simplified dosing option for patients who traditionally faced complexity due to resistance or tolerability issues with existing STRs. Bixlenvo combines bictegravir—a guideline-recommended integrase inhibitor with a high barrier to resistance—and lenacapavir, a novel capsid inhibitor with no cross-resistance to other antiretrovirals, directly addressing unmet needs in HIV treatment.
The approval was formally announced in a Gilead press release on August 27, 2026, and highlights results from ARTISTRY‑1 and ARTISTRY‑2 trials, with supporting data published in The Lancet and Lancet HIV, respectively.
In parallel, on August 4, 2026, Gilead reported its second-quarter 2026 financials, showing a total revenue of $7.8 billion—up 10% year-over-year—and product sales excluding Veklury rising 10%. HIV product revenues climbed 12% to $5.7 billion, fueled by higher demand and pricing, underscoring the strength of its core HIV portfolio.
However, the company posted a GAAP loss per share of $8.45 and a non-GAAP loss per share of $6.75, largely due to $9.08 of acquired in-process R&D (IPR&D) and tax charges linked to its acquisitions of Arcellx, Tubulis, and Ouro Medicines. Despite these charges, Gilead generated $3.6 billion in operating cash flow, repurchased $355 million in common stock, and paid $1 billion in dividends.
Importantly, the Bixlenvo NDA had previously been granted priority review by the FDA, with a PDUFA action date set for August 27, 2026—the day the approval was announced.
Today’s FDA approval of Bixlenvo, combined with the solid revenue performance in Q2, reinforces Gilead’s leadership in HIV therapeutics. Investors and stakeholders should monitor real-world adoption rates of Bixlenvo and its impact on competition and prescription dynamics within the STR market. Longer term, Bixlenvo’s success could provide a template for developing compact, resistance-resilient regimens in infectious disease treatment.
