Akamai Expands API Security with MuleSoft Integration to Address Shadow AI Risks
Fri, September 11, 2026Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM) on September 10, 2026 announced an expanded technology collaboration with MuleSoft aimed at unifying real-time API defense with AI policy governance to close emerging security blind spots in enterprise environments.
The integration links Akamai’s API Security intelligence with MuleSoft’s Agent Fabric, enabling organizations to discover, understand and govern APIs and AI-enabled infrastructure across distributed environments. The new offering is already in use by more than 20 joint customers. Akamai said the expanded integration helps counter risk from ‘shadow AI’ deployments—unmonitored AI agents and APIs that bypass conventional security controls—citing survey results where 87% of organizations reported at least one API-related security incident in 2025. Akamai plans to roll out additional product updates later in 2026, such as native MuleSoft onboarding and expanded runtime security for AI and MCP environments.
This announcement comes amid heightened concern around increasingly complex digital threats, especially as enterprises deploy distributed AI and agentic workloads. By combining API and agent governance, Akamai and MuleSoft aim to provide unified visibility and enforcement at the intersection of security and emerging AI infrastructure.
Why this matters for investors tracking AKAM
This development reinforces Akamai’s strategic shift toward becoming a security-first cloud infrastructure provider suited for AI-era demands. It underscores the company’s expanding footprint in AI-focused enterprise workflows, beyond content delivery, and aligns with broader growth in Cloud Infrastructure Services (CIS).
According to Akamai’s Q2 2026 financial results, CIS revenue grew 39% year-over-year to $99 million, while total revenue rose 5% to $1.1 billion. The company has secured more than $2.8 billion in multi-year CIS contract commitments year-to-date, including a $600 million, four-year agreement with a U.S.-based tech firm. Security revenue also posted a 10% year-over-year increase to $604 million.
Meanwhile, at the Citi Global TMT Conference on September 9, CEO Tom Leighton highlighted the company’s evolution from content delivery into a business now driven by compute and security, particularly with AI workloads powering the shift.
These trends indicate that Akamai is building out a differentiated platform at the convergence of AI, edge compute and security—an area garnering increased CIO and CISO attention. While there’s no clear indication yet of immediate stock-price reaction, this announcement reflects sustained momentum in Akamai’s strategic growth trajectory.
Looking ahead
Investors will likely monitor how adoption of the MuleSoft integration progresses in the coming quarters, whether it translates into new CIS or security bookings, and how Akamai further steps into AI infrastructure enablement. Upcoming events, such as the Salesforce Dreamforce conference (September 15–17, 2026), where Akamai plans to demonstrate these capabilities, may also provide more insight into market reception.
Meanwhile, caution remains warranted regarding supply constraints, margin implications from continued capital deployment, and competition from hyperscalers. But overall, the MuleSoft integration situates Akamai in a pivotal role amid enterprise AI governance trends.
