Wall Street Ends Turbulent Week as Bond Yields and Oil Prices Weigh; Moderna Stock Surges on Vaccine and Cancer Innovation

Fri, September 18, 2026

U.S. equity markets closed a volatile week with mixed performance on Friday as rising Treasury yields and shifting oil prices pressured investor sentiment, while a separate boost emerged in biotech as Moderna stock surged on regulatory approvals and cancer therapy optimism.

Markets Slip as Bonds and Oil Squeeze Sentiment

On Friday, Wall Street’s major indexes retreated after an earlier positive open. The S&P 500 fell approximately 0.22%, the Dow was down about 0.38%, and the Nasdaq lost roughly 0.16%, pressured by climbing Treasury yields and fluctuating oil prices. Ten of 11 major S&P 500 sectors ended lower, with the materials sector leading declines at around 1.4%. Market volatility was further heightened by the quarter-end “triple witching” event, when stock index futures, options, and stock options expire simultaneously. These developments capped off a turbulent trading week as investors recalibrated following the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate hike. Reuters commentary highlighted growing concern over what some strategists termed an “earnings bubble” amid strong corporate earnings growth.

The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq had opened slightly higher on Friday, with the S&P 500 up about 0.25% to 7,657.17 and the Nasdaq rising roughly 0.39% to 26,522.09. However, gains faded as the day progressed.

Moderna Leads Healthcare Rally with Regulatory Approvals and Cancer Vaccine Optimism

While broad markets were under pressure, Moderna (ticker: MRNA) emerged as a standout, rallying more than 7%, powered by investor optimism after the FDA granted approval to its updated 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine and its influenza vaccine, mFLUSIVA. Further confidence came from Argus upgrading Moderna to “Buy” with a $180 price target. Market enthusiasm was also fueled by optimism around Moderna’s personalized mRNA cancer vaccine co-developed with Merck, seen by analysts as a potentially transformational long-term growth driver for the company. The broader risk-on environment, buoyed by gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, also amplified enthusiasm for high-beta biotech stocks.

What to Watch Ahead

Investors will now watch closely for the trajectory of interest rates, Middle East geopolitical tensions, and mounting calls to slow AI advancements, all of which could influence whether equity indexes can resume their upward push. The Federal Reserve’s recent rate increase has left markets sensitive to expectations for further policy tightening. On the biotech front, Moderna’s upcoming presentation at a major healthcare conference and its forthcoming earnings in late October will be key event risks for investors tracking its innovation pipeline.

In summary, equity markets wrapped up a choppy week with yields and oil weighing on sentiment, while Moderna illuminated a brighter note in healthcare, as regulatory wins and cancer-vaccine promise fueled a powerful stock rebound.
